U Street Oral History Project

Content Description

Digital recordings of 20 oral history interviews by DCPL Special Collections Librarian Kelly Navies and related digital documents. 18 of the recordings are about the U Street cultural corridor. All of the U Street interviews have logs and two of them also have transcripts. Digital photographs and other documents were also included in the U Street transfer. There is also an interview with DC author Edward P. Jones, in 2 parts.

Scope and Contents The earliest postcards in the collection date from circa 1898 with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. The collection consists almost exclusively of imprinted (ink) postcards but also includes “real-photo” (gelatin silver) variety as well. The collection consists of 31 3.5x5 inch and 30 8x10 inch images of buildings 137 (General Foundry) and 167 (Boiler Makers shop) in the Washington Navy Yard complex. The smaller images are interior and exterior views of buildings and the larger images are reproductions of architectural blueprints.

This collection contains correspondence, internal memorandum, proposals, publicity materials, legislative materials, meeting minutes, editorials, and membership lists. Most of these materials are related to Home Rule voting rights for D.C. residents from the 1930s through the 1960s. Organizations mentioned in this collection include the D.C. Suffrage Association, Committee of the 100, Citizens Conference on District Suffrage, and Young People’s Home Rule League.
